Cucumbers have a limited storage potential and are highly sensitive to dehydration and chilling injury. Optimal storage temperature is typically 7-12°C, depending on cultivar, with a high relative humidity (~95%) to limit moisture loss and maintain firmness. Transport temperature should be adjusted to duration: 8–20 °C for short transport (<1 day), 10–14 °C for medium transport (1–3 days) and 13–14 °C for long transport (>3 days) (Conditions and product characteristics | Freshknowledge).

Table 1

Controlled or modified atmosphere storage offers only limited benefit for cucumbers. Reduced oxygen levels (3–5% O₂) may slightly delay yellowing and decay, while cucumbers tolerate elevated carbon dioxide levels up to ~10% CO₂ without major injury. However, CA does not significantly extend storage life beyond the effects achieved by proper temperature and humidity control.

Under optimal storage conditions, the maximum expected shelf life is up to approximately 14 days, depending on cultivar, packaging and handling.
