Shelf Life Calculator
Predict shelf life. Reduce waste. Boost value.
Shelf Life Calculator is an online, science-based tool that helps companies in fresh produce supply chains understand how storage and transport conditions affect product quality. Users can enter conditions such as temperature, humidity, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, or upload logger data, to estimate remaining shelf life and identify quality risks.
From storage data to freshness insight
The tool supports fresh produce, including a wide range of fruit, vegetable, and cut-flower species and cultivars. It calculates remaining storage life in days, shows quality-loss graphs, and provides an overall alarm level for risks such as shortened storage life, chilling injury, low oxygen stress or high CO₂ damage.
The tool is designed for growers, traders, exporters, cold-storage operators, refrigerated transport companies, cargo surveyors, retailers, monitoring service providers, researchers, educators and other professionals seeking to preserve quality, reduce waste and optimise handling decisions throughout the supply chain.

The project
Shelf Life Calculator was developed by Wageningen Food & Biobased Research as part of a Kennis-op-Maat (KoM) project with financial support from the Dutch Knowledge and Innovation Agenda (KIA). The project was carried out in close collaboration with partners from the fresh produce and logistics sectors: HDG Academy, FlowerWatch, GroentenFruit Huis, Fruit Bewaring & Advies (FBA) and the Koninklijke Nederlandse Vereniging voor Koude (KNVvK)
The tool is supported by an API connected to a database containing information on more than 250 products, offering possibilities for customised solutions and sector-specific applications to support data-driven decision making and quality management.
