Retail practices for cucumbers
Display temperatures should generally be kept between 10 and 15 °C, avoiding storage below ~10 °C to prevent chilling injury. High relative humidity (90–95% RH) is required to maintain firmness and prevent shriveling.
Packaging strongly influences retail performance. Shrink-wrapped cucumbers are better protected against moisture loss and can be displayed under lower humidity or ambient conditions, while unwrapped cucumbers require high-humidity environments and minimal air movement. Cucumbers should be kept separate from ethylene-producing fruits such as tomatoes, bananas and apples to avoid yellowing and softening. Gentle handling, limited stacking and proper stock rotation (FIFO) are essential to minimize damage and waste.
